MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Former Memphis Police officer Emmitt Martin III has been behind bars ever since pleading guilty to federal charges related to the death of Tyre Nichols. With a new trial on the horizon, his attorneys are attempting to get him out on bond.
Martin pleaded guilty to using excessive force and failing to intervene in the unlawful assault and conspiring to cover up his use of unlawful force by omitting material information and by providing false and misleading information to his supervisor and to others. Video of Tyre Nichols’ beating shows Martin kicking Nichols in the head and punching him in the head multiple times.
Martin’s attorneys filed a motion seeking his release on bond in March, but Judge Norris, who presided over the case at the time, denied it, ordering that Martin would remain in custody until sentencing…
