Dallas County Is Using AI to Fight Its No. 2 Rank for New HIV Cases

Despite being a public health priority for several years, Dallas County continues to struggle to prevent new HIV cases. But a new coalition between Parkland Hospital, the Dallas County criminal justice system, and the Parkland Center for Clinical Innovation aims to use artificial intelligence to reduce the number of new HIV cases in the county.

According to PCCI, Dallas ranks No. 2 in the nation for new HIV cases, and incarcerated people are three times more likely to acquire HIV than the general population. Dallas has long been aware of the issue. In 2019, it became a Fast-Track City, a designation by the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care to bring counties into an international network of more than 300 cities and municipalities working to end urban HIV epidemics.

PCCI’s model could be a game-changer to help Dallas County do just that. It uses a large language model to analyze health records to help providers identify those who are at-risk to trigger counseling, testing, and a prescription for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), which can help prevent HIV infection for those at risk of contracting it…
