Sparks Fly on Coppola’s “Megalopolis” Set, Doc Reveals
A new documentary, “Megadoc,” pulls back the curtain on the fiery dynamic between director Francis Ford Coppola and actor Shia LaBeouf during the making of Coppola’s epic, “Megalopolis.” The film, directed by Mike Figgis, captures tense exchanges and heated debates between the two, offering a glimpse into the sometimes chaotic world of filmmaking.
Figgis recounts his first encounter with LaBeouf on set, finding the actor practicing tai chi-like movements in a quiet corner of the gymnasium. This initial connection blossomed, leading to LaBeouf becoming a central figure in “Megadoc,” largely due to his passionate interactions with Coppola.
The documentary showcases LaBeouf questioning Coppola about character motivations and even suggesting scene changes, often leading to verbal sparring. One particularly memorable moment captured in the documentary involves an argument in Coppola’s trailer, after which LaBeouf reveals Coppola called him the “biggest pain in my fucking ass of anyone I’ve ever worked with.”
Despite the on-set tension, Figgis expresses admiration for LaBeouf, describing him as a “very interesting” and “unique” character. He is even developing a low-budget psychological thriller with LaBeouf in mind for the lead role.
“Megadoc” promises a fascinating look at the creative process, highlighting the clashes and collaborations that can occur on a film set, especially one as ambitious as “Megalopolis.” The film is currently playing in theaters.
