Johnson County sheriff withdraws support for joint law enforcement facility plan

JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa — Plans for a new joint law enforcement facility shared by the Iowa City Police and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office are now uncertain.

Johnson County Sheriff Brad Kunkel announced he no longer supports the partnership in a letter to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, citing differences in priorities and a lack of urgency from the city.

“I think it’s in the best interest of the county to pursue a standalone facility,” Kunkel said in a press conference on Thursday morning. He expressed confidence in reaching the 60% voter approval threshold for a standalone sheriff’s office and jail, adding, “I look forward to going down that road.”…
