Safety commission concerned over potentially dangerous incidents involving Metrorail doors

BETHESDA, Md. (7News) — This week, the commission that oversees Metrorail on safety said there has been a rise in the number of incidents in which train doors open either on the wrong side of the train or in a place where it’s not safe for riders to exit.

The Washington Metrorail Safety Commission (WMSC) adds that Metro is taking steps to address the situation, and Metro points out that the problem only occurs on an extremely small percentage of door openings.

WMSC said that as of Sept. 1, there have been 27 “improper door events” on Metrorail in 2025, more than double the number that had happened by that same date in 2024. The 27 reported so far in 2025 are more than the 25 reported in all of calendar year 2024…
