Approved with conditions: Grace Church youth ministries center
The board conditionally approved exterior designs for Grace Church’s new youth ministries center in downtown Greenville. The new center will be located in the two-story building at 50 S. Richardson St., currently occupied by Reedy Rides, a local bike rental business. Greenville-based Adeptus Architecture serves as the project’s architect.
Renovation plans include building an exterior addition to serve as the building’s new entrance at the corner of South Richardson Street and East McBee Avenue. The addition will contain a new lobby along with an elevator and staircase, two elements needed to bring the building up to code.
The project’s preliminary drawings presented at the city of Greenville’s project preview meeting in May showed an open-air plaza with an elevator shaft and staircase. W. Barry Agnew, CEO and senior founding principal at Adeptus Architecture, explained that the city’s planning staff recommended enclosing these elements at the corner of the building and creating a new interior lobby.
The new exterior addition would feature a historic profile storefront, metal canopies and a grey brick façade, similar to the coloring of Grace Church. Agnew said the addition is intended to be contextual to the existing building.
