Work to begin Monday on two downtown Mobile road projects

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — The City of Mobile will begin work Monday on two downtown road projects, according to a city news release.

St. Louis Street Complete Streets Project

Beginning Monday, St. Louis Street will be closed from Springhill Avenue to Bayou Street as work begins on the 17-block rebuild of the downtown corridor. Bayou Street will stay open for an additional two weeks. After that, Springhill Avenue to Scott Street will be closed.

The project, which will replace aging infrastructure and improve drainage, street lighting, landscaping, and Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility, will cost an estimated $17 million. It will also replace and repair the utilities, including water and sewer lines, underground through the entire corridor.

Officials estimate the time to finish this project to be two and a half years, but it will be done a block at a time in an effort to keep most of the roadway and connecting streets open and minimize disruption to the businesses on St. Louis Street…
