The city reels from the aftermath as Brandon Thompson is newly charged with first-degree murder following a violent episode near Zilker Park earlier this month. Already steeped in charges of attempted capital murder of a peace officer and burglary of a residence, Thompson’s rap sheet extended to include murder after the September 10th altercation that left one woman brain-dead and an Austin Police officer wounded. Details on the shocking events to emerge in succinct fashion: Officer Adam Reinhart, while performing a routine curfew patrol, came across a stolen vehicle set for towing. What began as a watch over the towed car soon escalated into a deadly confrontation when Thompson and Kay Smith, later identified as his girlfriend, approached claiming the car as theirs. The early morning tranquility was broken when Thompson allegedly shot Smith in the head and then turned his gun on Officer Reinhart. Despite the swift response by police, including a manhunt involving SWAT and K9 units, the suspect managed to avoid capture for nearly four hours. According to FOX 7 Austin, APD’s bodycam footage showed the grim reality of the scene, with Officer Reinhart uttering “Come out of the woods, come out of the woods real quick, come over here, you’re detained, you are not free to go,” prior to violence erupting.
