Sluggish consumer spending in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The City of Sioux Falls has released its August finance report and it shows that while sales tax is up from this time last year, it’s still relatively low. And one sector that’s feeling the impacts of that is the restaurant industry.

It’s something we’ve been hearing about nationally — a slowdown in consumer spending — and Sioux Falls is no stranger to it, which is impacting local businesses.

“We’ve had to cut hours, we’ve had to reduce the amount of food that we’re ordering,” Del’Inkka Beaudion, owner of Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen, said. “Just kind of being intentional as well as how we spend our dollars because we’re ultimately trying to stay open. But it has been very difficult, it has been very challenging.”

The City’s financial report for August shows that even though sales tax revenue is up just over two percent from this time last year, growth is still down from where it’s consistently been in the past. Director of Finance Shawn Pritchett says consumer sentiment numbers are also soft…
