Haywood Day of Resilience unites community to celebrate recovery from Hurricane Helene

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Residents came together Saturday, Sept. 20, to take part in Haywood Day of Resilience nearly a year after Hurricane Helene hit western North Carolina.

Em Nidiffer, the Vice Chair for the Smoky Mountain long-term recovery group, said it was a time to come together and celebrate the community bonds created and the resilience the community displayed.

“I think it can provide healing to folks,” Nidiffer said. “This was a very traumatic event, and that changed lives, and we still have a lot of work to do, but regardless of religious belief or political viewpoint, it is just to come together and just enjoy ourselves.”…
