Florida Beaches: Four to Visit, Three to Skip

Additional Coverage:

Florida’s coast boasts a unique collection of beach towns, each offering a distinct experience. As a nearly decade-long resident, I’ve explored many of these coastal gems, and here are my recommendations.

Seaside, nestled along the scenic 30A highway, is my top pick. This charming community offers stunning white-sand beaches, breathtaking sunsets, and a vibrant atmosphere.

From guided walking tours showcasing the town’s history to diverse dining options, unique shops, and outdoor concerts, Seaside offers something for everyone. Imagine Stars Hollow from “Gilmore Girls” with pristine beaches and sparkling blue waters.

It’s the ultimate Florida beach getaway.

A short drive from Seaside is another favorite, Panama City Beach. Home to the unforgettable Gypsea Crepes and other excellent restaurants, Panama City Beach also boasts the impressive Russell-Fields Pier, extending 1,500 feet over the Gulf of Mexico. Don’t miss a ferry trip to Shell Island, a pristine white-sand beach accessible only by boat.

For a blend of urban and beach vibes, Fort Lauderdale on the Atlantic coast is a great choice. While a popular cruise port, Fort Lauderdale retains a beach-town feel. Enjoy the many restaurants and stroll along the scenic Fort Lauderdale Beach Promenade.

On the Gulf Coast, St. Petersburg offers a quirky, beachy city experience.

From pedi-pub bike tours and gourmet brunches to tiki-bar cruises and unique attractions like the Salvador Dalí Museum and the dog-friendly Dog Bar St. Pete, there’s always something fun to do.

And when the city buzz gets to be too much, the relaxing beaches are just a short hop away.

Now for a few places I’d recommend skipping. While 30A is generally lovely, Alys Beach felt a bit underwhelming. The architecture is beautiful, but beyond the pricey shops and gated communities, there wasn’t much to do.

Similarly, Rosemary Beach, while aesthetically pleasing with its European-inspired design, offers limited activities beyond shopping and rooftop bars. A short visit for sunset drinks might suffice, but I wouldn’t recommend a long stay.

Finally, while many Floridians adore Miami, I haven’t quite caught the bug. The city’s crowded and chaotic atmosphere didn’t resonate with me. While events like the South Beach Wine & Food Festival and speedboat tours of celebrity homes offer some appeal, I’d personally choose other destinations for a city and beach experience.
