Charleston seeks solutions to peninsula flooding challenges

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — The City of Charleston is taking steps to address persistent flooding issues on the peninsula following record rainfall over the past nine weeks. During a city meeting on Thursday, officials discussed ongoing efforts to survey affected neighborhoods and implement improvement projects.

Robert Hauck, the city’s GIS Director, highlighted the severity of the situation, noting, “Over that time period, all the events, there’s 211 recorded road closures and 57 flooded vehicle responses that is from our fire department’s data.” He added, “To get that many in this short amount of time is definitely unusual. And I think it speaks to how extreme some of these events were.”

The city is focusing on areas with severe flooding, such as Rosemont, which has been identified as a high-risk zone. Kasey Henneman, a resiliency and nature-based solution engineer, explained, “Here in Rosemont, there was a high EJ flood risk EPA cleanup sites. And it’s also an industrial zone. So you can see, it shows why Rosemont is a good candidate for this project centered adaptation approach.”…
