DES MOINES, Iowa — This weekend brought plenty of activities to the metro — from a dog Olympics show to a church block party — but there’s something behind each of these events that makes them special in Des Moines.
In times of fear and uncertainty, people are looking to one another for connection and stability and can turn to “third places.” A paper published by the National Institutes of Health found that “third places,” defined as social spaces outside of work and home, can offer a sense of belonging and pride.
