Another fatal crash highlights Highway 55’s deadly reputation

BANKS, IDAHO, Idaho — The scenic highway from Marsing to New Meadows sees an average of eight fatalities per year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Most recently, a 45-year-old man from Caldwell died after losing control of his pickup truck and driving into the Payette River on Highway 55 north of Banks. The crash occurred Sunday night and closed both lanes of the highway for nearly 12 hours, according to Idaho State Police.
