Strong to severe storms possible early this week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Rain and thunderstorms will be returning to Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky this week. This is great for drought conditions, but it won’t come without a threat of strong to even severe thunderstorms.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Marginal Risk (Level 1/5) for severe thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday. The risk includes most of News 2’s viewing area.

FORECAST: Middle Tennessee & Southern KentuckyWeather

Although it’s the lowest level, it still needs to be taken seriously because it only takes one storm to cause damage.

The main threat with these storms is damaging wind, large hail and heavy rain. Within the strongest thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday, wind gusts over 60 mph will be possible.

Currently, the timing of the strongest thunderstorms will be in the afternoon. Between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. is when you will need to keep an eye on the skies, both Monday and Tuesday.

One silver lining in the unsettled pattern this week will be the much needed rain with our latest drought situation. Areas under the red color are under an extreme drought, orange – severe drought. Beige – moderate drought and yellow – abnormally dry. We really need the rain and I do think this week will help with that!

Each day brings a decent amount of rain and storm chances this week. When all is said and done, we could get anywhere from 1″ to 3″ of rain and local amounts could even exceed that.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely on Wednesday and Thursday, but it’s too early to know if those could be strong enough to cause damage…
