The Best College Bar in Iowa Has Been Revealed

With college football in full swing, The Athletic came out with their list of the 10 best college bars across the country. These include various metropolitans that are near notable colleges, such as New Orleans (Tulane University), Clemson (Clemson University), and Chapel Hill (University of North Carolina).

The list, written by a collective known as “The Athletic College Football Staff,” also included a popular watering hole in Iowa City that has been a late-night hotspot for University of Iowa students for multiple generations. The institution is known for cheap shots, and lasting appeal among some of the famous luminaries who have attended Iowa, such as Cedar Rapids native Ashton Kutcher.

The Airliner in Iowa City Made the List:

The Athletic tabbed The Airliner in Iowa City as one of the ten best college bars in the entire country. Famously, the aforementioned Ashton Kutcher was discovered by a modeling agent while hanging out at the Airliner when he was a student at Iowa back in 1997. The following year, he was one of the stars of That ’70s Show.

“The ‘Liner,” as it’s known by locals, opened all the way back in 1944. The Athletic staff notes that the University of Iowa was a “Navy pre-flight site during World War II,” and the name attracted career airmen who wanted a place to knock back a few after a long day of training.
