DAVENPORT, Iowa – Residents across northern Iowa should be on alert this evening as isolated strong to severe storms move through the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) Quad Cities says the greatest risk for severe weather will occur between 7 p.m. and midnight.
What to Expect
Forecasters warn that storms could produce:
- Gusty winds up to 60 mph
- Frequent lightning
- Small hail capable of damaging vehicles and crops
The highest risk zone includes Waterloo, Dubuque, and Cedar Rapids, though surrounding communities may also experience hazardous weather conditions.
Storm Risk Level
The NWS has placed the region under a Level 1 marginal risk, meaning isolated storms are possible. While widespread severe weather is not expected, even a single storm can bring dangerous conditions to travelers and outdoor events.
Officials are reminding residents that, “When thunder roars, head indoors.”
Travel and Outdoor Impacts
Drivers should prepare for:
- Reduced visibility from heavy downpours
- Possible road delays on I-380, Highway 20, and rural routes
- Scattered power outages if winds down trees or power lines
Outdoor plans in parks, festivals, and sporting events should have backup shelter locations ready in case storms intensify quickly.
Outlook After Midnight
Storms are expected to weaken after midnight as they push eastward. However, unsettled conditions could linger into the next day, keeping rain chances elevated in eastern Iowa…
