Inside the Investigation: Kazius Childress

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – In January of 2022, Kazius Childress murdered two people on back-to-back days.

On January 27, 2022, 19-year-old Cordal Lewis was shot, robbed, and left to die in broad daylight in the middle of a neighborhood on 31st Street Drive Southeast. The next morning, a Cedar Rapids school bus driver spotted 22-year-old Kavon Johnson lying in Cedar Valley Park and tried to render aid. Johnson had also been shot to death.

The two killings rocked the community and led to a long and complicated search for the killer. Multiple witnesses refused to cooperate with Cedar Rapids police leading the case to begin to turn cold, but surveillance video proved to be the break investigators needed to pinpoint the killer, Kazius Childress. Childress pleaded guilty to two charges of second degree murder and was sentenced to 100 years in prison…
