AKRON, Ohio – Recent calls by some Ohio residents to eliminate property taxes have prompted Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro and Summit County Council to approve legislation to place a property tax limitation charter amendment on the November ballot.
If voters approve the measure, the Summit County Charter will be amended to place a limitation on unvoted property taxes under the charter to 2.2 mills and prohibit the increase of property taxes greater than 3% annually in aggregate, according to the Summit County Board of Elections website.
“Concerns about rising property taxes are rightly dominating conversations in all corners of this state, Shapiro said in the release. “However, recent legislative proposals to unilaterally cut inside millage and a proposed Constitutional amendment to abolish all property taxes are short-sighted and provide minimal or no framework for how essential local services, like police, fire and jails, would be maintained. We are proud to say we hear the concerns of our residents and we are taking action to find a solution for our portion of their property tax bill. We believe this proposal to enact responsible tax reform for the county’s unvoted inside millage is the right proposal for Summit County.”…
