Tortilla Throwdown: Local Food Writer Ranks Top Supermarket Brands

A warm flour tortilla can be a thing of beauty – delicious on its own, or as the foundation of countless culinary creations. But finding a quality tortilla in the supermarket can be a challenge. After more than a decade of food writing and three decades living in tortilla-loving California, I’ve put my expertise to the test, sampling ten popular brands to determine which reign supreme.

The Winner’s Circle: Guerrero Caseras Flour Tortillas

I’ll admit, I approached Guerrero with some trepidation, having heard mixed reviews. But these tortillas blew me away.

While no packaged tortilla can truly replicate the magic of handmade, Guerrero comes impressively close. Perfectly charred, with a chewy, satisfying texture and a rich, authentic flavor, these are a clear winner.

The difference between Guerrero and, say, Old El Paso, is night and day. I’ll definitely be buying these again.

Second Place: Vista Hermosa Flour Tortillas

Vista Hermosa’s thin, homestyle tortillas come closest to a restaurant-quality experience, though the flavor falls just short of Guerrero. A slightly wheatier taste keeps them from the top spot, but these are still a solid choice.

Third Place: Trader Joe’s Sonora Style Flour Tortillas

Despite the name, these tortillas aren’t quite true Sonora style (no lard or pork fat here). However, they offer excellent flavor and are sturdy enough for small burritos. Just be warned, they are on the smaller side.

The Rest of the Pack:

  • 4. 365 Whole Foods Market Flour Tortillas: Perfectly consistent, but lacking in flavor. Fine if your fillings are doing the heavy lifting.
  • 5. La Tortilla Factory Organic Traditional Flour Tortillas: A slightly unusual, earthy flavor, but good structural integrity. Perfect for a bean and cheese burrito.
  • 6. Mission Flour Tortillas: The dividing line between good and bad.

Bland, but satisfyingly chewy. Excellent for quick snacks.

  • 7. Trader Joe’s Homestyle Flour Tortillas: Visually similar to Vista Hermosa, but the texture is a letdown. Prone to cracking and tearing.
  • 8. Hero Flour Tortillas: Not bad for a healthy, low-carb option. The olive oil adds an unusual aroma.
  • 9. La Banderita Flour Tortillas: A strange, almost Asian-inspired aroma, which intensifies when heated.
  • 10. Old El Paso Flour Tortillas: Starts bland, finishes with a strange, unpleasant aftertaste. And why no resealable bag?
