A New Approach to DUI Enforcement in Vanderburgh County
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office has announced a new partnership with the Vanderburgh County Fire Department aimed at improving DUI enforcement while minimizing inconvenience for drivers. This new initiative authorizes certified Fire Department paramedics to perform evidentiary blood draws in certain impaired driving investigations.
How the On-Scene Blood Draws Work
Under Indiana law, deputies must establish probable cause, consent, a warrant, or other legally recognized circumstances before requesting a blood sample. What changes under this agreement is the process. Instead of requiring transport to the jail or hospital, trained paramedics can now draw blood in a secure, sanitary environment – often inside an ambulance – when they are already on scene providing care or when transport is unnecessary.

“This agreement ensures that impaired driving cases are handled promptly, safely, and in accordance with Indiana law, while also sparing motorists from unnecessary trips to the jail or hospital. By utilizing Fire Department paramedics who are already on scene, we can minimize delays and reduce disruption for drivers.”

The Vanderburgh County Fire Department emphasized that the initiative reflects a strong tradition of inter-agency cooperation. Fire Chief Adam Farrar noted, “This partnership highlights how public safety organizations can work together to provide better service for our community.”
