There’s a new ‘king of beers,’ but it’s still connected to Anheuser-Busch

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. — One beer is claiming to be the “king of beers,” and though it’s not Budweiser, it is owned by St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch.

Michelob ULTRA is a light beer brand known for tying its image to sports and active lifestyles, and now, it’s officially claimed the title of America’s No. 1-selling beer. The beer launched in 2002, and both Circana and Nielsen confirm that the brand has overtaken its beer rivals.

“This is a proud moment for our teams and partners and speaks to the resilience of the American beer category,” said Kyle Norrington, chief commercial officer at Anheuser-Busch. The brand’s playbook has included being the official beer sponsor for prominent sporting events from Team USA to the NBA and the upcoming FIFA World Cup of 2026…
