Relationship scams on the rise

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — This summer, scams have been a hot topic as more people fall victim. Relationship scams in particular are on the rise.

“The two women I know that have been affected, one lost nearly her entire retirement savings. And another one lost tens of thousands of dollars,” said Jessie Schmidt, the vice president of the South Dakota region’s Better Business Bureau.

But these scams aren’t new.

“I was a detective for many years and we saw them even back then,” said Sergeant Aaron Benson with the Sioux Falls Police Department. “So, it’s something that has evolved over the years, is the type of ways that money has been forwarded to the suspects in these cases.”…
