SPARKS, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — SPARKS, Nev. — Residents living near the Sparks Marina have been grappling with a persistent trash and odor problem in the canal running along their waterfront properties. The canal, which receives storm drain runoff, has become a collection point for debris and a source of foul smells.
Sparks resident, Jackie, expressed her frustration, saying, “We only come out back when we have to.” She added that the smell is so bad she keeps her windows shut. “I’ve gagged more than once just walking back out here and it very much smells like sewage,” Jackie said.
Another Sparks resident, Lee Hagstrom, said he he’s smelled the stench but his enjoyment of lakeside living isn’t marred by it. “It’s a dream. I live where I can go get in the kayak every morning,” said Hagstrom.
City of Sparks city engineer Ashley Elson explained that heavy rain in August flushed garbage into the water. “We had a couple heavy thunderstorms that flushed a fair amount of garbage from our storm drain collection system and unfortunately the marina is the receiving body for the storm drain,” said Elson…
