State allocating more funding for school vouchers compared to average per-pupil amount

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The state is investing an average of $273 more per student in private school students than students in public schools, according to data discussed in a Tennessee Board of Education meeting.

Governor Bill Lee pushed for the ‘Education Freedom Scholarship’ program for years, which passed in late January. It provides a scholarship of $7,295, from public tax dollars, to 20,000 students.

Data presented at a meeting in August shows the state is investing $7,023 per student in their state share of funding to school districts across the state. That number is calculated by taking the state’s funding of around $6.8 billion, divided by the enrollment number, around 966,000 students…
