A Fruitland Park man was arrested for battery after allegedly punching and choking his ex-girlfriend for making jokes.
Officers responded to a domestic battery at an undisclosed Leesburg residence around 12:20 a.m. Thursday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. The ex-girlfriend of 56-year-old Dwayne Lee Hopkins advised that he had just hit her.
Upon arrival, the officers found her standing alone in a dimly lit area. She had blood on her forehead, and her left eye was swollen. She started by saying she and Hopkins lived together in a shed behind a residential property for the past few months, and they had broken up a few days ago, the report said.
The ex-girlfriend was joking with him that day, and he became upset. He started to swing a stick at her but never hit her. However, when she blocked it, he charged at her and choked her with one hand to the point she could not breath, the report said…
