SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Lawmakers will gather in Pierre on Tuesday for a special session to tackle the issues of a new men’s prison in South Dakota. Lawmakers will consider legislation that approves a new men’s prison in Sioux Falls for $650 million.
Still, for the bill to arrive on Governor Larry Rhoden’s desk, it needs the support of two-thirds of legislators in both the House and Senate. We asked people today what they think should happen with the prison situation in South Dakota.

“Clearly, there needs to be a new facility; the facilities currently are suboptimal and not conducive to community, reentry, and so I think there needs to be a new prison. I mean, we have a responsibility to not only keep people safe but also ensure that people who are incarcerated are ready to come back to the community when they serve their time,” said Wanda Sieler.
“I don’t have enough information to make a good decision on that, but listen, prisons if you put people in there, they should be getting good care. It’s an old prison; perhaps it’s a good idea, but that’s a lot of money,” said Bill Fleming…
