[1] NM National Guard talking with Española officials about potential partnership – In August, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a state of emergency in Rio Arriba County, Española, and the surrounding pueblos after seeing an increase in crime. Española’s police chief told lawmakers that funding from the order is already being put to use. Major General Miguel Aguilar, with the New Mexico National Guard, told lawmakers they are in conversations about how a National Guard presence could help the area. Aguilar said they are looking at the possibility of sending guard members into the Española area in the future.

[2] Bernalillo County seeks state funding to expand juvenile detention center – State lawmakers are facing questions from Bernalillo County juvenile justice leaders over a surge in serious youth crimes. County leaders testified that the youth services center needs more funding to operate at max capacity. Leaders say 37% of youth in their detention center face serious charges, forcing longer stays than the facility was built for. Bernalillo County’s center holds about 40% of juveniles from other counties. To meet growing demands, the director says the county is requesting approximately $22.2 million in state funding,
