Camera system upgrades in Cohoes, Watervliet and Troy

WATERVLIET, N.Y. (NEWS10) -There’s around 180 cameras actively being used in Cohoes, Watervliet and Troy. Video and audio surveillance assists in a variety of crime investigations including some where suspects drove off in Troy or were never reported in Watervliet.

“A lot of this stuff is small things like hit and runs and things like that but we’ve been able to solve those,” said Chief Dan DeWolf of Troy. Chief William Rice of Watervliet added, “We did have a shooting on 19th and 7th from another juvenile all caught on video.”

Through a more than $500,000 state grant, additional cameras will be installed and existing cameras will be replaced around the tri-city area. New features include zoom and 360 degrees of rotation that will invest into what all three police chiefs consider crucial tools.

“One instance, we had a nine-year-old who was a runaway and we were able to track them from Troy all the way through Cohoes through use of five of our existing cameras into Greene Island and then locate that JV,” described Chief Todd Waldin of Cohoes.

Storage will also be increased to hold terabytes worth of audio and video. It allows the smallest details to be captured and hopefully solve more crimes. “They provide critical evidence that holds offenders accountable when their day in court comes and they give law enforcement the ability to respond quickly and therefore they can continue to keep our neighborhoods safer,” explained Assemblyman John McDonald III…
