Legendary Italian actress Claudia Cardinale has passed away at the age of 87. Known for her captivating beauty and impressive range, Cardinale graced the silver screen in numerous iconic films, including Federico Fellini’s 8 1/2, Luchino Visconti’s The Leopard, and Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West.
Born in Tunis, Tunisia, in 1938, Cardinale’s journey to stardom began with a beauty contest victory. Her film debut came in 1958’s Goha, but her breakthrough role arrived with Visconti’s Rocco and His Brothers in 1960.
Throughout the 1960s, she solidified her status as a leading lady in Italian cinema with performances in films like Girl with a Suitcase and Cartouche. She also charmed international audiences with her role as Princess Dala in The Pink Panther, starring opposite Peter Sellers.
Cardinale’s career continued to flourish with prominent roles in Hollywood productions such as The Professionals and Don’t Make Waves, while also maintaining a strong presence in European cinema. Her collaborations with director Pasquale Squitieri, her partner until his death in 2017, yielded several notable films, including Blood Brothers and Claretta.
Cardinale’s on-screen presence captivated audiences for decades. Her agent, Laurent Savry, confirmed her passing in Nemours, France, surrounded by her children.
Savry described Cardinale as “a free and inspired woman both as a woman and as an artiste.” She is survived by her children, Claudia Squitieri and Patrick Cristaldi.
