At 96, Dr. Ira Eliasoph Still Embraces Life
Dr. Ira Eliasoph, a remarkable 96-year-old, retired from his ophthalmology practice at the age of 92, not due to any decline in his abilities, but because he felt it was simply time. Even then, he claims he was steadier than the young residents he worked with!
Eliasoph’s 70-year medical career included a dramatic naval rescue and a roster of celebrity patients. Now, he fills his days with painting, visits with friends, and participation in the SuperAgers Family Study, a research project focusing on the secrets of longevity in individuals 95 and older.
Following in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Benjamin Eliasoph, a renowned physician who invented the oxygen tent, Eliasoph credits a lifelong low-fat diet and a calm approach to life for his long and healthy life.
“The only real emergency is if the house is on fire,” he advises. “Otherwise, pretty much everything can wait.”
He’s passed this wisdom, along with the importance of listening to one’s body and managing stress, on to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A Lifetime of Curiosity and Connection
A lifelong learner, Eliasoph believes that “curiosity and observation every day are essential.” From mastering various camp activities as a child to pursuing a medical career like his father, he always sought new challenges. He speaks with pride about his career, including a daring lifesaving mission as a US Navy medical officer and the development of new surgical instruments.
Today, Eliasoph continues to nurture his artistic talents through painting and drawing, and he’s currently working on both his memoir and a biography of his father.
Diet, Supplements, and a Dash of Sweetness
Maintaining the low-fat diet instilled by his father, Eliasoph focuses on protein-rich meals with plenty of vegetables. Although he limits sugar, he doesn’t deprive himself entirely, enjoying small portions of ice cream or pudding. He also supplements his diet with vitamins C, B12, and folic acid.
Independent Living, Strong Connections
Despite living alone, Eliasoph maintains strong connections with his family and friends. Regular phone calls keep him close to his children, while his stepson and wife provide nearby support.
He also enjoys regular outings to a local beach club, where he connects with friends. And, of course, there’s Bandit, the cat he adopted after surgery in 2015, who provides constant companionship.
Dr. Eliasoph is a testament to the power of lifelong learning, strong connections, and a healthy lifestyle. His story is an inspiration to us all.
