HOLMES BEACH, FL (SNN) — The grace period is over in Holmes Beach, and newly-installed school zone cameras near Anna Maria Elementary are already catching drivers going too fast.
Many of them, according to police, are tourists unfamiliar with the area’s strict school zone rules.
School zone speed camera enforcement hours expanded in Hillsborough County
After a one-month warning period, the automated enforcement cameras are now issuing real fines to drivers who exceed the 15 mph speed limit during school zone hours. The cameras are activated when school zone lights are flashing, and tickets are issued to anyone driving 11 miles per hour or more over the limit.
“During the warning period we had two fire trucks, an ambulance, and three police vehicles out there telling people to slow down — and we still had 77 drivers speeding,” said Chief Bill Tokajer of the Holmes Beach Police Department…
