Italian Oil Giant Inks $1B Deal to Buy Fusion Power From Virginia Facility

WASHINGTON — The Italian multinational oil and gas company Eni S.p.A. has signed a $1 billion power purchase agreement to buy fusion power from a plant in Virginia that won’t even be connected to the grid until sometime in the early 2030s.

Commonwealth Fusion System, which traces its roots to the Plasma Science and Fusion Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is one of the leading private companies in the fusion power sector.
