ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Rochester police are investigating a string of robberies against mail carriers. In the last few weeks, RPD has reported five incidents involving assault and theft toward USPS workers.
Currently, there are no suspects in custody and police have not identified a possible connection to any of the incidents.
Monday afternoon, another mail carrier was assaulted and robbed by a group of men in Rochester’s 19th Ward at the intersection of Maxwell Avenue and Ellicott Street. “This is something I’ve never seen. I’ve been with the postal service for 34 years, and for 25 years, I carried. There was never fear of going anywhere. This is something unprecedented,” said Monique Mate, president of the Nat’l Association of Letter Carriers Branch 210. Mate oversees more than 500 USPS carriers in the Rochester area and says these latest incidents are ‘grab and go’ crimes. No serious injuries have been reported.
