A documentary produced by El Pasoan Laura Varela, highlighting loss and life after military deployment, is screening at the El Paso Film Festival.
American Sons tells the story of the brotherhood formed by a group of Marines deployed to Afghanistan. Video taken by Corpora J.V. Villareal, a young Mexican American from San Antonio, helps tell the story through his eyes. Villareal died while in combat in 2010.
“He was deployed to Afghanistan, and he took his video camera to show his loved ones, his family and his friends, what it was going to be like for him during this deployment. Unfortunately, he did not make it home two weeks before the whole unit came back. He was killed in action with an IED.
