A New Iberia legend was officially memorialized at the former Mount Carmel on Duperier Drive thanks to funding from a New York-based organization that strives to tell the folk stories of communities around the country.
The William G. Pomeroy Foundation and Teche Project officially celebrates the installation of a plaque telling the story of the “Bayou Teche tunnel” that was said to take the pirate Jean Lafitte from the building to the Bayou Teche, with public officials and even former Mount Carmel students attending to celebrate the occasion.
