‘This isn’t the end’: Western N.C. congregations lean on faith a year after Helene

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — Bee Tree Christian Church has had a presence in the Buncombe County community of Swannanoa for more than 150 years, but for the past year what’s left of it has sat empty after floodwaters from Helene rushed through.

The congregation still worships in borrowed spaces.
