Guilderland student tests positive for typhoid fever

GUILDERLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The superintendent of Guilderland schools informed the district that one of its students tested positive for typhoid fever. The student attends Guilderland Elementary School and is recovering at home.

The student did not have symptoms at school and will remain home until fully cleared by both their doctor and the Albany County Health Department, according to Superintendent Daniel Mayberry. The superintendent said no additional cases have been identified and the risk to schools is considered low.

Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection caused by Salmonella Typhi. It is rare in the United States and is most often linked to international travel. People can become infected by eating or drinking food or water contaminated with stool from someone who carries the bacteria. Most cases are mild and treatable with antibiotics. Serious illness is uncommon.

Symptoms may include fever, headache, stomach pain, and light pink “rose colored spots” on the chest or stomach. If your child develops any of these symptoms, you’re advised to contact your doctor and mention possible exposure to typhoid fever…
