Erie’s oldest bar closes; new business set to take over space

One of Erie’s oldest bars is shutting down this weekend, paving the way for a new business to take its place.

The Rathskeller Cafe on State Street has been serving the Erie community since 1934, but now its run is coming to an end.

New businesses look to operate in Harborcreek, township continues to develop

The bar manager, John Carneval, said they were having trouble finding a buyer to take over the bar, but another opportunity opened up instead.

He said they found a new tenant looking to turn the space into a bookstore and coffee shop, but he will miss the live music and regulars who frequented the bar.

Carneval said, “I’m disappointed that we weren’t able to find someone that could take on the future running of the Rathskeller, but I’m glad that we had a chance to do it and made as many friends as we did. With hope, I’ll happen to see them out and about if I decide to see a show.”…
