WARRICK COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) — The Warrick County Surveyor is raising concerns at the possibility of coal waste spilling in Pigeon Creek due to a potential breach at a coal refuse dam just off of Interstate 69.
Surveyor Dennis Wilzbacher calls the dam poorly constructed and a breach could lead to a major drainage that will affect multiple counties. He’s urgently making state leaders aware of his findings but says he’s been left with more questions than answers.
“I fear the dam is unstable,” Wilzbacher said. “The structure holds 22 million yards of coal waste. The embankment we’re standing on here is built out of another 5 million yards of coal waste.”…
