PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Providence Retirement Board denied granting a high-ranking Providence police officer accidental disability pension on Wednesday.
As Target 12 previously revealed, Providence Police Lt. George Smith has been on injured-on-duty status collecting his annual salary of $111,279 tax-free for more than seven years. That makes Smith the longest active IOD case.

On Wednesday, Smith’s accidental disability pension application was taken up before two city panels. Smith was not present at either meeting.
