Alleged Uber driver killer could face federal death penalty

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The man accused of killing his Uber driver in Albuquerque to “let some steam off” could face the death penalty if he is convicted of federal charges he is now facing.

Police arrested 18-year-old Sheliky Sanchez for allegedly shooting Joseph Andrus multiple times Aug. 7. Sanchez allegedly told police he randomly picked Andrus as his driver. Andrus died at the scene.

A federal grand jury indicted Sanchez on charges of carjacking and kidnapping, each resulting in death, and using a firearm during a violent crime. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, each federal charge is eligible for the death penalty…
