A Landmark Worth Celebrating
Old Main is one of the most recognizable sights on campus. Its red-brick Victorian tower rises against the backdrop of Boulder’s famous sandstone peaks, offering a view that symbolizes both the university’s pioneering spirit and the natural beauty of Colorado. For nearly 150 years, it has stood as a proud reminder of CU’s origins and Boulder’s commitment to higher education.
From 1876 to Today
Construction began in 1876, the same year Colorado achieved statehood, and Old Main opened to students in September 1877. At first, it served every role—classrooms, administrative offices, and even CU’s first library.
By the 1920s, the building had fallen into disrepair, and there were calls for demolition. Instead, CU chose preservation, undertaking renovations that saved the structure.
