MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) will soon offer free rides, despite being millions of dollars in debt.
The Memphis City Council approved Tuesday a monthlong free fare pilot program. The city said it hopes more people will ride MATA and even become permanent riders.
The bill to cover the program comes out to about $2 million. FOX13 caught up with MATA riders at bus stops around the city who said the program will be a great benefit for them. Many of them rely on the bus to get to work. Others said it’s about time MATA made some strides to improve its services…
