USA Today reported that on Wednesday, Sep. 17 in York County five police officers were shot, leaving three of them dead and the two others critically injured. Detective Sergeant Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker, and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser were the three first responders who tragically lost their lives while attempting to serve a warrant for Matthew J. Ruth.
Ruth was reported for stalking, prowling at nighttime and criminal trespass. When officers arrived at the residence to investigate they were attacked by Ruth who began firing at the officers with an AR-15 rifle. Spring Grove Area School District conducted a “shelter-in-place”, stating that, “Middle school and high school students who had already departed on a bus or van for afternoon dismissal are being returned to the school they departed from and will remain there until we are cleared to proceed.”
Meanwhile, while the situation was unfolding many students and faculty members were left in confusion, unsure about what was happening. Ms. Eckenrode, Athletic Administrative Assistant, stated she, “was having different thoughts and was trying to provide comfort to her hockey girls.” Mr. Craig, Launch Coordinator, said that he “hoped none of his friends in the force were involved in the shooting.” After the shooting occurred many people in the community felt angry. Mr. Hastings, teacher at Spring Grove, stated he is, “proud of the first responders, but sad for the lives that were lost.” Mrs. Smith, a substitute teacher at Spring Grove, stated that it was “unnecessary violence”…
