3 arrested in Winchester for allegedly trafficking fentanyl

WINCHESTER, Ky. (FOX 56) — A woman and two men were arrested on Wednesday when a K9 alerted police officers to the presence of drugs when their car was pulled over.

The Winchester Police Department (WPD) wrote on Facebook that around 7 p.m. on Sept. 24, officers stopped Thomas McCarty, 35, of Morehead, who was driving with two passengers on I-64 East near Exit 96.

Officers said that a K9 named Jensik alerted them to the presence of drugs during the stop, leading investigators to seize 36 grams of fentanyl and 30 grams of methamphetamine.

McCarty was charged with:

  • Speeding 12 miles per hour or more over the limit
  • Obstructing vision inside a vehicle’s windshield
  • License to be in possession
  • Aggravated trafficking in a controlled substance – 10 or more grams of carfentanil or fentanyl derivatives

He was lodged in the Clark County Detention Center. Court records show he is being held on a $2,000 cash bond.

Steven Preston, a passenger in McCarty’s car, was charged with first-degree possession of carfentanil or fentanyl derivatives. Officers said Haley Brotherton, a second passenger, was arrested in connection with two outstanding warrants.
