The youngest member of a legendary Texas barbecue family is closing its doors for good. After more than a decade of serving the Austin area, a popular smokehouse will serve its last batch of brisket, ribs, turkey and more come the first weekend of October.
Schmidt Family Barbecue, the third-generation outpost of Lockhart’s Schmidt family — the barbecue masterminds behind Kreuz Market and Smitty’s Market — has been serving the community of Bee Cave, west of Austin, since it opened in 2013. Yet in a bittersweet moment, the family-owned barbecue joint announced it is closing for good on October 4 after 12 “incredible years.”
“It’s a moment filled with mixed emotions—pride in what we’ve built, sadness in saying goodbye, and deep gratitude for the journey,” Schmidt Family Barbecue wrote in a Facebook post. “We’re immensely proud of the business we’ve grown, the friendships we’ve made, and especially our amazing team—many of whom have been with us since day one and have truly become family.”…
