AIKEN, S.C. (WJBF) – Hankinson Gym is known for its youth program “Gloves Up, Guns Down.” For this episode of “Your Hometown Road Trip,” the team invited the Hankinson Gym family to the WJBF studio to chat about their program, what it means to the community, and more.
What are you all about?
“My wife and I, we started a program, Hankinson Boxing Gym, Glove Up, Guns Down. We started in 2015. We opened our backyard up to the kids in the community, and all over the neighborhoods across Aiken. So I’ve seen a vision that I wanted to help the community and help kids out, so I came to my wife and I told her, I want to do something different. She asked me what I was going to do, and I didn’t play football, I didn’t play basketball, I didn’t do nothing but box growing up. So I knew I could do that, so I opened it up, I built the ring in the backyard, me and my friend, and we just opened our gates up to the kids in the community,” said Co-Owner James Hankinson…
