CMPD to appoint sergeant to tackle cold cases amid families’ quest for justice

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is adding a full-time cold case sergeant to investigate unsolved homicides and sexual assaults, as families of victims continue their push for justice years or even decades after losing loved ones to violence.

The new position represents CMPD’s deeper commitment to addressing unsolved cases, according to department officials. The sergeant, who will transition from the homicide unit with extensive experience, will focus exclusively on cold case investigations.

“We are hoping to get some results for families,” Jason Helton with CMPD said. “Somebody who transitioned from homicide with great homicide experience, they will be looking at cold case homicides and cold case sexual assaults.”…
