DENVER (KDVR) — The Broomfield Police Department said it helped locate a bear last week that was spotted wandering around Broomfield.
BPD assisted Colorado Parks and Wildlife in locating the bear, which was tranquilized and “safely relocated to a better habitat,” police said Friday.

CPW offers a number of tips on what to do in the event of a bear encounter, including how to avoid attacks at home, how to protect pets and what to do if a person and a bear cross paths.
How to avoid attracting bears to your home, according to CPW:
- Never leave trash or recyclables out overnight
- Avoid placing meat or fruit scraps onto mulch or compost piles, if composting
- Remove birdfeeders from April to November, when bears are most active
What to do if you cross paths with a bear, according to CPW:
- Never approach bears or offer food
- Stand still, say calm and let the bear identify you and leave
- Talk in a normal tone of voice
- Never run or climb a tree
- Be sure the bear has an opening to leave the area
- Wave your arms slowly overhead and talk calmly, if the bear doesn’t leave
- Maintain eye contact and slowly back away until the bear is out of sight
How to protect pets from bears, according to CPW:
- Keep dogs leashed
- Always supervise pets when outside at home, especially at dawn or dusk
- Secure a pet in a fully enclosed kennel, if it must be kept outside
- Don’t feed pets outside or leave pet food outside
